Anonymous 4
featuring the world premiere of Pulitzer winning composer David Lang's "the wood and the vine"
"The pristine tone of each singer was the group's greatest feature. In unison, voices blended into a single sound, achieved through flawless intonation and avoidance of excessive vibrato. How the artists could sustain pitch perfection and maintain a warm sweetness of tone for a full concert amazed." — C.J. Gianakaris, Kalamazoo Gazette
Originally formed in 1986 to experiment with the sound of medieval chant and polyphony as sung by higher voices, the four women of Anonymous 4 (Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek, and Ruth Cunningham) have become world-renowned for their astonishing vocal blend and technical virtuosity. The distinctive, otherworldly voices of Early Music’s reigning queens have enchanted listeners with nearly two million copies of the group’s 21 recordings of medieval, contemporary, and American music sold worldwide. This silver anniversary concert will feature the world premiere of ‘the wood and the vine”, a new work adapted from a text by the late-12thcentury poet Marie de France, written for the vocal quartet by David Lang, one of the founders of Bang on a Can, and winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for his Little Match Girl Passion.
