Concert update: UCR’s presentation of “Homeland” will feature special musical guest LOU REED.
Recognized worldwide as “the reigning performance artist of her time,” (Boston Globe) Laurie Anderson’s Homeland, is a “concert poem” driven by the political urgency of contemporary America. Conceived as one long piece of music, Homeland takes aim at America’s storyteller culture where entertainment trumps information in today’s omnipresent context of war. Moving from Greek tragedy to American business models, Homeland synthesizes the climate of fear, the role of advertising, and the push-pull between information and security to offer a mesmerizing turn on the reflection of life in art. Homeland is Anderson’s most sophisticated production to date. The surging sonic backdrop features new melodic forms that Anderson has been developing on the violin in her work with new electronic systems and Tuvan throat singers. She is backed by top-notch New York musicians skilled in the art of improvisation so each performance is unique.
Homeland was commissioned in part by: The Barbican Centre, London; Cal Performances at UC Berkeley; Luminato Festival of Arts and Creativity, Toronto; Melbourne International Arts Festival; Society for the Performing Arts, Houston, Texas; University of Florida, Gainesville.
